So what can be said about this figure of Thor, The Mighty Avenger, as played by Chris Hemsworth, that hasn’t already been said in the first review I did for the Battle Hammer Thor action figure review? Just a little bit more, but a lot stays same.

First, what is the same between figures? First of all, the sculpting detail is just a outstanding for the head and hammer here. The figure looks just as good as the other because of the re-use of the same head sculpt, and even the hands are the same, including the opened left hand. Not that I mind, it saves Hasbro some production costs, and it still gives us a great figure with some tweaks to the body sculpt. Also the same, as it should be, is Thor’s hammer Mjöllnir, looking just like the other figure’s. My only complaint here is the same as on the other hammer, the seam stands out so much. Also detracting form what could make the figure better is the sculpted hair preventing Thor from look straight up or ahead when flying. Aside from that, that’s where the similarities seem to end.

So what’s different? The chest and body sculpting, while still using the same base body, are definitely different, and in my opinion, improved. Added to his arms are some nicely sculpted (for the scale) and silver painted chain mail pieces, which look very nice indeed. The knee pad armor is also different, not better or worse, just different and stands out. There is more detail to the front, including the trademarked small circular pieces added to his front armor, and his red cape in molded plastic.

While I might have liked a cloth cape, they sometimes don’t look as good as they could sculpted, and this is one of those times. Now along with the addition of the cape, I would think they might have finished painting back unlike the other Thor figure. Nope, it’s still pretty drab, I guess Hasbro thought covering it with a cape would be a way to get around painting the back. If that’s the case, then why is a cape missing from the other figure?

As for the accessory, the Sword Spike? Another piece-o-crap for the parts drawer. It’s a big rod that has an inner green translucent sword-thing inside that comes out when you push the button to reveal it. Yeah, not something I think Thor would ever need, not with Mjöllnir at his side. Get rid of it and keep the hammer.

Bottom Line

If you want a more traditional looking Thor for your movies figures and choose between the Sword Spike Thor or Battle Hammer Thor, I would go with this one. With the red cape and circular armor pieces, this looks like a movie version of the Thor we always see on Marvel comic book covers. And he just cool next to Iron Man from last year. Much like the other Thor figure, I will say it again – I can’t wait for the Captain America figures to come out so I can have my movie universe Big Three for the Avengers on my shelf. And if you are a more traditional Marvel comics fan, this is DEFINITELY the movie Thor figure for you!
