The adoptive stepbrother of Thor, Loki is played by Tom Hiddleston, in the upcoming Marvel Studios film. Hasbro has also produced a figure for the Thor movie line of Loki too. Does this figure match up to the Thor figures from the first wave? Let’s find out…

Let’s start by looking at the sculpt of the figure. A little leaner than most figures this scale, but that’s fitting in with the actors look and portrayal of Loki himself – lean and hungry for so much more. There is nice detailing at the shins of some what look to be leather guards, as well as the popped up 80′s styled neck collar and gloves and wrist gauntlets. Of particular notice, just like the Thor figures, the face is a good likeness of the actor himself. Loki looks like the Loki we will see onscreen, and that’s a good thing.

My biggest complaint in the sculpting and design of this figure is the wrap around waist piece. It is supposed to act as a bit of longer cloth that hangs from the waist, perhaps trying to look like part of a long robe like shirt. But because the waist has a molded indention on it to form fit a loose fitting separate sculpted rubber piece for this hanging part of the costume, it doesn’t look as good as it could. The middle waist piece spins around a bit too much and detracts from the overall solid look of the figure.

Sadly too is the paint job on this figure isn’t as good as the Thor figures. While the tones of light green and olive drab green mix well, and fit with the sparse us of gold for armor and jewelry, the mix of the same tones below for his pants and shin armor in differing shades of brown make this figure look very dark, very plain. Add to that the fact that under the figure’s chin you can see where the neck joint is clearly dark green, and not a flesh painted color or molded in flesh color. All this makes me think I am looking at some sort of small tree branch desperately wanting to be an action figure…

Finally, the accessories. Two tiny daggers that could easily get lost in a simple molded gray color. Each one has a little different handle on them and look decent enough, but with no color, easily forgettable. As for the Secret Strike Sword? Its to hunks of plastic with handles that lock in around an oversized dagger with a big gawdy handle. I think that this would be something you might find as an accessory on the latest episode of Beverly Hills 90201, and can be easily tossed to the side as well, almost like this figure. What’s missing that would really make this figure is a helmet as seen in the comics and trailer – Loki’s signature circular horned helmet…that should have been the accessory with this figure.

Bottom Line

Without that helmet, without a decent paint job, and without trying to look like a twig, sadly the awesome face sculpt can’t save this figure. Until we see a Loki figure come out with the horned helmet and possibly a Cosmic Cube accessory, this is one figure you can pass up on. Thor does fine without his adoptive stepbrother around to mess things up, so the same holds true on your toy shelf with this guy too. Save your bucks for another Thor figure, or Captain America figure coming out soon.

  • Loki is a mixed bag for me. I really like the overall sculpt and design while I despise the “tracheotomy neck” that he has going on due to the paint and neck joint. However, visually I find this figure really just comes together well.

I’ve seen a few pics where folks have tossed on the modern Serpentor helmet from the DDP #16 Joe comic back to make a modern casual Cobra Emperor.

I agree that the gimmick weapons are ultimately throw-aways.
